A good pickleball gift basket has one useful anchor item, a few things players run out of, and one funny extra like a pickleball mug. That mix works for a birthday, a thank-you to a coach or a club raffle. Here is what to put in it, what to leave out, and how to pack it so it looks full.
Start with things every player uses up, then add one item that is just for fun. Players go through balls and grip tape all season, so those never sit unused.
If you want more gear ideas for the practical part, see our list of pickleball gifts that are actually useful.
The fun item gives the basket its personality. For the friend who keeps score a little too loudly, the Tears of My Pickleball Opponents tumbler says it plainly: "Tears of My Pickleball Opponents."
Use a container the player will keep using after the gift is opened. A basket that turns into court gear is a second gift.
Choose a size you can fill. A small basket that overflows looks more generous than a big one that is half empty. Crumpled tissue paper in the bottom lifts everything up so it shows.
Pick the anchor item first, then build around it from the tallest thing to the smallest. It takes about as long as wrapping a present.
A mug is handy in the middle of the basket because it holds the small things. Tuck the overgrips or a gift card inside it. The It's a Good Day to Play Pickleball mug is an easy one to build around, since the line fits any player: "It's a Good Day to Play Pickleball."
Need a theme to start from? We have basket ideas for every kind of player in a separate guide.
A raffle basket needs a clear theme and one prize people can spot from across the room. You don't know who will win it, so build it for any player.
Put the basket where people buy their tickets, not on a back table. A small sign with the contents helps people see what they could win.
Choose humor that works at any skill level, too. A beginner and a tournament regular can both own the joke on the World's Okayest Pickleball Player mug: "World's Okayest Pickleball Player."
For more prizes that suit a mixed crowd, look through these gift ideas that aren't another paddle.
Leave out anything that depends on the player's size, skill level or taste in gear. Those are the items that get returned or never used.
A new player is the exception. A starter paddle can be the anchor of the whole basket, and our guide to pickleball gifts for beginners covers what else they need.
At the other end is the player who has everything. For them, stick to things that get used up and one good joke.
Set your total first, then let the anchor item take about half of it. There is no right amount. A basket looks generous when it is full, not when it is expensive.
If money is tight, we wrote a full guide to building one on a budget.
Match one item to the way this player really plays, and add a short handwritten note. One right detail beats ten random ones.
Who the basket is for changes the picks, too. We have separate lists of pickleball gifts for mom, pickleball gifts for women and pickleball gifts for him, plus one for a pickleball boyfriend.
For the friend who plans the whole week around court time, the I Can't I Have Pickleball mug already says what they tell everyone: "I Can't I Have Pickleball."
What they'll remember is that you noticed how they play. Write the note, tie the bow, and hand it over before the next game.
