The easiest pet costume ideas are the smallest ones: a bandana, a soft collar piece, or a hat the pet can shake off. If the dog or cat looks stressed, the costume comes off, and the photo can wait for next year.

The ASPCA's Halloween safety tips say not to put your dog or cat in a costume unless you know they love it. They also say to check costumes for small, dangling or easily chewed-off pieces that could be a choking hazard.

My own messy rule: if it takes two people to get it on, it is not a costume, it is a wrestling match. Here are the low-drama ideas that tend to go over well:

A plain orange or black bandana, which most dogs already wear for walks
A soft lion mane that sits loose around the neck
A small hat on a stretchy band, for the five seconds you need for the photo
A "costume" for the human instead, like matching cat ears for the owner

If you are giving a costume as part of a gift, pair it with a gift receipt. Some pets simply say no, and that is fine. If your office runs a contest, a "best pet costume" category is a fun one to add to the costume contest prizes.

What about candy in a gift for a pet person?

Keep the chocolate for the humans and keep it out of reach. The ASPCA warns that chocolate, especially dark or baking chocolate, can be very dangerous for cats and dogs, and that sugar-free candy with xylitol is harmful too.

That changes how I build a gift for a pet house. Instead of filling a mug with candy, I put a small bag of dog treats or a cat toy next to it. Some pet people love Halloween. Others hear the doorbell for the fortieth time, listen to their dog lose it at every trick-or-treater, and want to hide in the bedroom with the dog until November.

Halloween night is loud for dogs, and a lot of dog owners spend it on the couch keeping a nervous pup calm. This mug says out loud what they are already doing.
